    • Pa.R.C.P. Rule 400 — Person to Make Service

      In Pennsylvania, original process shall be served within the Commonwealth only by the sheriff of the county in which the defendant resides or is located, except as otherwise provided by these rules or by law. However, the court may on cause shown permit service by any adult person not a party. Process Servers Pennsylvania works closely with county sheriffs' offices across Pennsylvania and maintains authorization orders where needed to execute service on behalf of law firms when sheriff delivery timelines would prejudice your client.

    • Pa.R.C.P. Rule 401 — Time for Service

      Original process must be served within 30 days after the issuance of the writ or the filing of the complaint. If service cannot be made within 30 days, a reissuance or reinstatement may be requested. Process Servers Pennsylvania monitors all outstanding serves and alerts your firm before the 30-day window expires, preventing costly praecipe to reinstate filings.

    • Pa.R.C.P. Rule 402 — Manner of Service; Acceptance of Service

      Original process may be served by: (1) handing a copy to the defendant; (2) handing a copy at the residence of the defendant to an adult member of the family; (3) handing a copy at the residence of the defendant to an adult person in charge of the residence; (4) handing a copy at any office or usual place of business of the defendant to the defendant's agent or to the person in charge thereof; or (5) any other method authorized by a rule of court or special order.       Where an alternative method of service is authorized, service may be made by mail addressed to the defendant at the address where service by mail is permitted under the applicable rule.       The sheriff, or other person making service, shall make a return of service showing the time, place, and manner of service, the identity of the process server, and, if service was not made, the reason therefor.
